Getting Started

Explain what Styx does, how the first-run flow works, and how to choose between guest mode and an account.

Purpose

Explain what Styx does, how the first-run flow works, and how to choose between guest mode and an account.

Who this is for

  • people opening Styx for the first time
  • people deciding whether to try the app without an account
  • people who want to understand the basic setup before using the checklist

What you can do here

From the first run, Styx lets you:

  • start planning in this browser without creating an account
  • sign in or register if you want sync and account features
  • use a magic link instead of a password
  • accept the disclaimer and enter the dashboard
  • choose your state or territory in Settings

Styx helps you start quickly while keeping sensitive planning data under your control.

Step-by-step instructions

Start on the homepage

  1. Open Styx in your browser.
  2. Review the homepage message.
  3. Choose either Start planning in this browser or Sign in or create account.

You can start without an account if you want browser-only planning first.

Choose guest mode or account mode

  1. If you want browser-only planning, choose the guest-mode path.
  2. If you want sync, sharing, and account-backed storage, choose sign in or create account.
  3. If you already know you want browser-only planning, you can also use Guest Mode directly.

Guest mode is the fastest way to try Styx. Account mode adds continuity across sessions and devices.

Use the sign-in page

  1. Open the sign-in page.
  2. Pick one of the tabs: Sign In, Create Account, or Magic Link.
  3. Follow the prompt for the option you chose.

The sign-in page keeps the options separate so you can choose the flow that fits your situation.

Continue into the app

  1. Review the welcome disclaimer.
  2. Confirm that Styx is not legal, financial, or tax advice.
  3. Continue into the dashboard.

On first visit, the app uses a disclaimer step before the main checklist appears.

Set your state or territory

  1. Open Settings after you reach the dashboard.
  2. Find the state or territory selector.
  3. Choose the place you are planning for.
  4. Save the selection.

That choice affects the guidance and resources you see while working through the checklist.

Important caveats or limitations

  • Styx is not legal, financial, or tax advice.
  • Guest mode keeps data in the current browser unless you export or migrate it.
  • Account mode adds sync and convenience features, but you still need to choose your state or territory.
  • The user documentation is English-only for now.
  • Some app screens are available in Spanish, but the published help docs are English-only right now.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the disclaimer and assuming Styx is a legal-document service.
  • Creating an account when you only wanted a quick browser-only trial.
  • Staying in guest mode and expecting data to appear on another device automatically.
  • Forgetting to set the state or territory before reviewing guidance.
