Sharing and Export
Explain how to export Styx data, generate PDFs, and share a read-only plan with a trusted person.
Purpose
Explain how to export Styx data, generate PDFs, and share a read-only plan with a trusted person.
Who this is for
- people who want a portable backup of their planning data
- people preparing a checklist PDF, document locator, or letter of instruction
- account users who want to invite a trusted person
- trusted people who need to view a shared plan
What you can do here
Styx supports several export and sharing paths:
- download a full checklist PDF
- download a document locator PDF
- download a letter of instruction PDF
- download a planning worksheet PDF only when a reviewed worksheet is available for your selected state or territory
- export and import a portable TXT backup from Settings
- invite a trusted person to view a read-only shared plan
Export and sharing are separate features. Backups are for your own data. Shared plans are for limited read-only access.
Step-by-step instructions
Export the checklist PDF
- Open the export page.
- Select Download PDF.
- Save the downloaded file.
The checklist PDF includes your statuses, completion dates, and notes.
Export a document locator PDF
- Open the export page.
- Select Document Locator PDF.
- Save the downloaded file.
This PDF organizes your recorded documents with their storage locations and related details.
Export a letter of instruction PDF
- Open the export page.
- Select Letter of Instruction PDF.
- Save the downloaded file.
This PDF aggregates contacts, assets, documents, preferences, and beneficiaries into a single handoff document.
Export a planning worksheet PDF
- Open the export page.
- If your selected state or territory has a reviewed worksheet available, select Planning Worksheet PDF.
- Save the downloaded file.
This button only appears when a reviewed worksheet is available for the current jurisdiction. Do not expect it to appear for every state or territory.
Export or import a TXT backup
- Open Settings.
- In Data Export & Import, select Export TXT Backup to create a portable copy.
- Use Import TXT Backup if you need to restore a previously exported file.
The backup format is TXT with embedded JSON markers. Settings still accepts older .json exports for compatibility. Use a backup when you need a portable copy for yourself; use sharing when you want someone else to view a limited read-only snapshot.
Invite a trusted person
- Sign in to an account.
- Open Account from Settings.
- In Trusted Person Sharing, enter the trusted person’s email address.
- Choose an expiry period and send the invite.
The recipient can accept the invite after signing in with the invited email address.
Open a shared plan
- Sign in to an account.
- Open the shared plan from the invite list or the shared-plan link.
- Review the read-only snapshot.
Shared plans show limited data only. They are for viewing, not editing.
Important caveats or limitations
- Shared plans are read-only.
- Shared snapshots intentionally omit notes, private contact fields, and assets.
- Trusted-person sharing requires an authenticated account.
- PDF exports contain planning information that should be stored securely.
- The planning worksheet PDF is only shown when a reviewed worksheet is available for the current jurisdiction, and it may not appear for many states or territories yet.
- English is the only supported documentation language right now.
Common mistakes
- Treating a shared plan like an editable copy.
- Sending a PDF or backup file to someone without considering the sensitivity of the contents.
- Expecting the worksheet PDF to appear for every state or territory.
- Mixing up the backup export with the shared-plan invite flow.
- Trying to use trusted-person sharing from guest mode.
