Explain how Styx uses your selected state or territory, how browse mode works, and where to find jurisdiction-specific guidance and public landing pages.

Who this is for

  • people planning in guest mode who need local guidance
  • signed-in users whose account is tied to a specific state
  • people comparing another jurisdiction before they move, travel, or help someone else
  • users in territories where deeper legal guidance is still being reviewed

What you can do here

  • set your primary state or territory in Settings
  • browse another jurisdiction without changing your primary selection
  • view public state or territory landing pages that summarize local planning considerations
  • open jurisdiction-aware resources, glossary entries, and public reference pages
  • see when territory guidance is intentionally limited to universal planning plus local resources

Step-by-step instructions

Set your primary state or territory

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Find the State or Territory section.
  3. If you are in guest mode, choose your state or territory and select Save Selection.
  4. If you are signed in, choose your state or territory in the account section and save the change.

Your primary selection controls the default guidance, resources, and labels you see across the app.

Browse another jurisdiction

  1. Open the sidebar.
  2. Use Browse another jurisdiction....
  3. Select a different state or territory.
  4. Review the Browsing as ... banner at the top of the app.

Browse mode is session-only. It changes the guidance you are looking at, but it does not replace your primary jurisdiction.

Use a state or territory landing page

  1. Open a state landing page such as /estate-planning/wa.
  2. Review the summary cards for that jurisdiction.
  3. Read the checklist overview and the local notice at the top of the page.

These pages are public and are meant to help you understand the local planning context before you start.

Check local resources

  1. Open Resources from the sidebar or visit /resources.
  2. Review the universal resources first.
  3. If you have selected or browsed into a jurisdiction, review the state-specific resources below them.

Important caveats or limitations

  • Styx is not legal, financial, or tax advice.
  • Legal rules vary by jurisdiction and can change.
  • Some states show additional summary cards while deeper supplement content is still under review.
  • Some territories intentionally show the universal checklist plus curated local resources instead of full local legal overlays.
  • Browse mode does not change your primary jurisdiction.
  • English is the only published documentation language right now.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming browse mode permanently changes your account or guest profile.
  • Treating a territory page like a full legal review when it is intentionally limited.
  • Missing the difference between your primary state and the jurisdiction you are only browsing.
  • Looking for Spanish help docs, which are not published yet.
