Troubleshooting

Help you recover from common Styx problems without guesswork.

Purpose

Help you recover from common Styx problems without guesswork.

Who this is for

  • guest users whose data seems to be missing
  • signed-in users whose sync or account flow is not behaving as expected
  • people confused by browse mode, jurisdiction changes, or public pages
  • users who hit import, offline, or shared-plan issues

What you can do here

  • figure out whether data is local-only or synced
  • recover from a failed backup import
  • exit browse mode and restore your primary jurisdiction
  • understand when offline mode is expected
  • tell the difference between shared read-only plans and your own editable plan

Step-by-step instructions

My data is not saving

  1. Check whether you are in guest mode or signed in.
  2. If you are in guest mode, remember that data stays in the current browser unless you export it or migrate it to an account.
  3. Make sure you are using the same browser and profile where you entered the data.
  4. If you are signed in, wait for sync to finish and reconnect to the internet if you are offline.
  5. If the browser storage was cleared, look for a TXT backup or a server-side account copy. If neither exists, the local data cannot be restored.

I signed in and my guest data did not move

  1. Sign in from the same browser where the guest data already exists.
  2. Watch for the Local Data Found dialog.
  3. Choose Import to Account if you want to keep the local browser data.
  4. If you choose Start Fresh, the local guest data is cleared instead.

My backup import failed

  1. Use the latest TXT backup exported from Settings.
  2. Make sure the file was not renamed into something unrelated.
  3. Try the import again from Settings > Data Export & Import.
  4. If the app shows Invalid backup file, re-export the backup and try again.
  5. Legacy JSON backups are still accepted, but the current export format is TXT with embedded JSON markers.

I am seeing the wrong state or territory

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Change your primary state or territory.
  3. Save the change.
  4. If you only wanted to compare another jurisdiction, use the browse selector in the sidebar instead of changing your primary selection.
  5. If the browse banner is visible, select Exit browse mode to return to your primary jurisdiction.

A territory page looks incomplete

  1. Check the notice at the top of the page.
  2. Use the universal checklist guidance and the curated local resources that are shown.
  3. Do not assume the missing detail is a bug if the page says local legal review is still in progress.
  4. If you need legal certainty, confirm the details with a licensed local attorney.

Shared plans look incomplete

  1. Check whether you opened a shared read-only plan instead of your own editable plan.
  2. Remember that shared snapshots intentionally omit notes, private contact fields, and assets.
  3. If you are the recipient, sign in with the invited email address before accepting the invite.

The app says I am offline

  1. Use the dashboard or another cached page while your connection is down.
  2. Keep editing if you are in guest mode and the data is local to this browser.
  3. Reconnect to the internet when you can.
  4. Return to the dashboard after reconnecting so account changes can sync again.
  5. If the app shell looks stale after an update, close and reopen the tab or do a hard refresh after reconnecting.

Spanish docs are missing

  1. Use the app as normal if you are comfortable with the interface.
  2. Remember that the help docs are published in English only right now.
  3. Do not assume a missing Spanish guide means the app itself is unavailable.

Important caveats or limitations

  • Guest-mode data lives in the current browser unless you export or migrate it.
  • Shared plans are read-only by design.
  • Territory guidance can be intentionally limited while legal review is in progress.
  • If local data is gone and you do not have a backup or an account copy, Styx cannot recover it for you.
  • English is the only published documentation language right now.

Common mistakes

  • Using a different browser and expecting guest data to appear automatically.
  • Confusing browse mode with a permanent state change.
  • Importing an old or malformed backup file without re-exporting it first.
  • Expecting a shared plan to include private notes or every asset field.
  • Thinking offline mode means your account data will sync immediately.
